Religion

Religion and Christ are still able to find their way into a Victorian Christmas amid all the exuberant festivities. The three pieces included in this section highlight the way music and poetry warm the Victorians’ hearts through religious reflections. While many Victorian carols celebrate the Christmas season’s secular traditions, others—like some found in A Victorian Christmas music album or A Booke of Christmas Carols—have the carolers singing of the first Christmas night and the sacred Christ Child. Other written works, such as that of A Christmas Welcome to the Saviour Guest, transcend the religious contention and sectarian divides of the era and emphasize a Christian’s duties. These religious texts promote the glad tidings and goodwill ushered in by the Savior’s birth.
