Old Father Christmas is a children’s picture book full of poems about different seasons and beautiful, colored illustrations. Christmas is one of the featured seasons in this book, as it was often given as a gift at Christmastime. The first Christmas poem is similar to the well-known “The Night Before Christmas” poem, which depicts customs very similar to our modern-day Christmas celebrations. The second poem highlights a popular Christmas tradition during the Victorian era known as “Christmasing.” This was the gathering and selling of holly to decorate homes, that took place around Christmas. These poems are a beautiful representation of the cheerful side of a Victorian Christmas.
