Anthony Trollope published his short story “The two generals, A Christmas story of the war in Kentucky” in the third year of the American Civil War, in the periodical Good Words. The story follows two very different brothers and their relationship as they fight on opposing sides of the bloody conflict. Though an Englishman, Trollope chose this particular (and then timely) American struggle to contrast the nature of Christmas in bringing people together and the harsh reality of the Civil War tearing families apart.
