Mayhew, Henry and Augustus. Acting Charades, or, Deeds Not Words: a Christmas Game to Make a Long Evening Short, London, 1850

Title page of "Acting Charades"

To keep entertained on a long Christmas Eve, families and friends in Victorian England would often perform wordless skits, or pantomimes. Acting Charades, or, Deeds Not Words is a charming book that contains dozens of mini three act plays, each play based on a two syllable word. While one group tries to act out each syllable of the word, and then the word as a whole, the other group guesses, and the long Christmas Eve is passed with laughter and fun.
