A Christmas Fog is proof that our obsession with a good Christmas love story is not new.
The plot (worthy of a modern Hallmark Christmas special) centers around Miranda Cheape, a lonely, single, 34 year old woman who finds herself mistakenly trapped in the flat of a stranger after getting disoriented in a thick fog the night before Christmas Eve. The owner returns and amidst the awkward and comical situation that ensues, the two manage to fall in love. And in true romantic fashion, the two end up engaged, all thanks to the events of that fateful Christmas night.
John Strange Winter was a woman. Though A Christmas Fog is credited to John Strange Winter, the true identity of the author is Henrietta Elizabeth Vaughan Stannard. Stannard adopted the pen name John Strange Winter for all literary and business purposes in her life. The pseudonym is taken from a character in one of her previous works, Regimental Legends, who bore the same name. Previously, Stannard had assumed the pseudonym of “Violet Whyte” but then changed it to John Strange Winter as the publisher she was using refused to publish and works under a feminine name.
