Dickens, Charles. The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain, 1848

Redlaw is haunted by the phantom that is eerily similar to himself.

Written in 1848, The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain is the last of Charles Dickens’ Christmas novellas.  The book centers on Professor Redlaw, a man haunted by his painful memories of the past, and an eerie phantom that offers to remove those memories from him.  Redlaw agrees, but suffers greatly as a consequence.  Realizing his mistake, Redlaw learns to forgive those who have wronged him, teaching the reader that it is both the good and bad experiences that make us who we are.
