Jerome, Jerome K. Told After Supper, 1891

The cover

Billed as “An Uncharacteristic Set of Christmas Ghost Stories” Told After Supper is a humorous anthology of spooky stories only partially recalled by a boozy narrator.  Jerome was an influential British humorist who is best remembered for his comedy Three Men In a Boat, which sold so well it’s considered to have played a large part in establishing the Thames as a tourist attraction. Here, Jerome turns his wit towards the English tradition of telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve—“It is always Christmas Eve”—in what could be taken as a parody of the immensely popular A Christmas Carol, written by Dickens 48 years earlier.
